Happy Birthday to one of the greatest Black leaders this country has ever seen.
A List Of Malcolm X’s Most Powerful Quotes
There are few figures in the black freedom struggle as dynamic and complex as Malcolm X who would have celebrated his 86th birthday if he were still alive today. Dr. Manning Marable’s recently released book, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, has helped spark new debate and renewed popular interest in this iconoclastic and central figure of the civil rights era.
Before his life was taken by the bullets of assassins, some of whom may have never been brought to justice for their crimes, Malcolm X was on a breathtaking journey building new organizations and planting the seeds of a global Pan-African movement to help address the crisis faced by blacks in urban America. Dr. Marable’s new work methodically peels back the layers and helps shed light on the real Malcolm X, who, though imperfect and flawed as the rest of us, was steadily undergoing personal transformation and evolving politically. But just as powerful as his actions were his words which struck chords, ignited debates and roused audiences all over the globe.

Jack Morris turns 57 today.
Morris was a very good pitcher, back in the 1980′s, with the Tigers. Not quite a Hall of Fame pitcher (though you never can tell what the BBWAA might do) but a guy that won a lot of games (helped along by a very good Tiger offense) and pitched a lot of innings. I’m 1983 he threw 293.2 innings, with 20 complete games.
The Jays signed him before the 1992 season. Morris had just helped the Minnesota Twins to a World Series win over the Atlanta Braves. He won two games in that series, including game 7, one of the greatest pitching performances in the history of the World Series. He pitched a 10 inning shutout, keeping the Braves off the scoreboard long enough for the Twins get the only run of the game in the bottom of the 10th.
The Jays signed him hoping he could get them a World Series win too. He had the reputation of being a winner. And in 1992 he was a winner, going 21-6, with a 4.04 ERA in 34 starts, again helped out by great offense. He was our first 20 game winner. We couldn’t get enough runs for him to be a winner in the playoffs. In the ALCS against Oakland, he was 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA and, in the World Series against the Braves, he was 0-2 with a 8.44 ERA.
Jack had a poor 1993 season, going 7-12 (even great offenses can only do so much) with a 6.19 ERA and didn’t pitch in the playoffs that year. But he picked up his 4th World Series ring.
Morris won a lot of games in his career, 254. He was a good pitcher, who was helped out by pitching for teams with great offenses. As well as pitching a lot of innings, he gave up a lot of home runs (389 in his career, 15th on the all-time list) and a lot of walks (1390, 19th all-time).
He was never a fan favorite in Toronto, we kind of disliked the Tigers back then and he had been their best pitcher and, well, he never had the warmest of personalities. Since he didn’t pitch all that well for us, we really didn’t grow to like him.
Happy Birthday Jack. Hope it is a good one.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago is remembering Studs Terkel Wednesday, on what would have been his 100th birthday.
Terkel died at the age of 96 on Oct. 31, 2008. While he was actually a native of New York City, he became a Chicago legend as an author, broadcaster, oral historian and political activist.
Those who knew Terkel say curiosity fueled his life – a characteristic reflected in the words he sought to be remembered by.
“My epitaph is a simple one – curiosity did not kill this cat,” Terkel said on the occasion of his 96th birthday.
Terkel, whose given name was Louis Terkel, was born on May 16, 1912, and moved to Chicago with his family at the age of 8. His family owned and lived in a rooming house at Wells Street and Grand Avenue, and the young Terkel spent his free time in Bughouse Square, at Clark and Walton streets, where amateur orators would make speeches standing upon soapboxes.
Terkel received a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1934, but never ended up using it. Instead, he began working in radio as an actor, news commentator and disc jockey.
In 1949, Terkel became an early pioneer in television with “Studs Place,” an improvised sitcom where he played himself as the owner of a greasy-spoon diner.
“Studs’ Place” was taken off the air in 1953, after Terkel was blacklisted for refusing to provide information about left-wing activists at the height of the McCarthy era in 1953. But Terkel remained on the radio for decades to come, hosting a variety show on WFMT-98.7 FM that aired from 1952 all the way up until 1997.
“The Studs Terkel Program” featured interviews with a vast array of guests – among them Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Leonard Bernstein, and Langston Hughes.
Meanwhile, Terkel gained celebrity as an author and oral historian. Among his best-known collections of oral histories based on his conversations were Division Street: America (1967), Hard Times: An Oral History o the Great Depression (1970), Working: People Talk about What They Do All Day and How They Feel about What They Do (1974), The Good War: An Oral History of World War II (1984) and Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Reflections on Death, Rebirth and a Hunger for Faith (2001).
He gained a reputation for documenting the extraordinary lives of ordinary citizens.
After retiring from his WFMT program, Terkel continued in radio, contributing interview segments to the news magazine program “848” on WBEZ-91.5 FM. He also remained active in the political and social life of America and the world – and of Chicago in particular.
For one example, in 1999, he marched with protesters in hopes of reversing the city’s decision to make Lower Wacker Drive off limits to the homeless.
“Not only did he give so much to this city, but was also, in some ways, Chicago’s greatest ambassadors,” WBEZ’s Steve Edwards told CBS 2 shortly after Terkel’s death.
An array of events are planned in Terkel’s honor Wednesday, and in the coming days:
• The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St., will hold a 100th birthday party for Terkel from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
• The Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., is holding a program, “100 Years of Studs Terkel,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are $15, or $10 for members.
• On Monday at 7 p.m., the Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted St., will hold a staged reading of Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
• A two-part Studs Terkel film and video festival is planned for next month. It is set for Saturday, June 2, at the Chicago History Museum, and Sunday, June 17, at the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.

Elizabeth Santorum at Hot Air reminds us that the Santorum household has a double reason to celebrate today:
Sunday is an important day in the Santorum house. On May 13th, we’ll be celebrating a birthday. My little sister, Bella, is turning four. As some of you can imagine, having seven kids in my family, we do a lot of birthday parties. Various sweets, party hats, and re-used gift bags are always floating around the house, waiting to be used in the next celebration. Our house is a happy one, full of life. That being said, Bella’s birthday is always uniquely joyful and the cause of grateful reflection. I say this because every year with Bella is a gift. Bella was born with a rare genetic condition called Trisomy 18. Of the 10% of babies with Trisomy 18 who survive birth, 90% won’t make it to their first birthday. When she was born, the prognosis was bleak. The odds were simply stacked against her.
Ten days after she was born, Bella came home from the hospital. As doctors explained to us how to best prepare for her death, we chose to celebrate her life. And we did, every, single day. I remember when we first brought Bella home; we hung a sign in our living room. It read, “Happy 1-Week Birthday Bella.” As the weeks went by, we changed the sign from 1 to 2 to 3 weeks. Eventually weeks turned into months and now, thanks be to God, years. We fought for her each step of the way, giving her every opportunity to do well. She beat the odds and has been doing so ever since.
As I reflect on this last year of her life, it has been amazing to see how many people Bella has touched and the issues that have been discussed in the public sphere as a result of her condition. In the middle of winter, when the world found out that Bella had been hospitalized, the response was overwhelming. Our inboxes and mailboxes were flooded with notes of encouragement, prayer, and support. People in all walks of life from around the country united around the witness of a three-year-old little girl. We even got notes that said, “I don’t agree with you politically, but thank you for being a voice for the special needs community.” She brought unity and refocused us on what was really important in the midst of a heated primary season.
Go here to read the heartwarming rest. Love does not prevent us from encountering difficulties, hardships and tragedies in this life, but it does give us the strength to surmount them. Love, and the courage and strength that it brings, is what Mother’s Day is truly all about.

Robert Pattinson, who the world knows best as dreamy vampire Edward Cullen from “The Twilight Saga” celebrates his 26th birthday on Sunday (May 13). And since he’s moving into his late 20s and coming up on the final “Twilight” installment, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” Pattinson is already making moves to distance himself from the character.
In a new photo spread for Premiere France magazine, Pattinson appears unshaven and sporting a nasty gash on his abdomen in a picture inspired by the movies of David Cronenberg (“Eastern Promises,” “A History of Violence”). Pattinson’s first post-”Twilight” role will be as a decadent businessman in the Cronenberg-directed “Cosmopolis.”
“Rob was sorry that they weren”t more daring, wanting to push all the limits with this shoot,” reads the accompanying article. The magazine promises it will make any “Twilight” fan see Pattinson in a new light.

The quality of this Skyrim Alduin birthday cake is amazing. It barely even looks like a cake. It looks more like an awesome figure that you could buy. Vera from Baking Obsession made this cake for her son’s birthday, modeled it after a sculpture from Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector’s Edition, to look just like Alduin the dragon.

The dessert was created from four 13″x18″ sheets of chocolate cake, soaked in strawberry syrup, and sandwiched with bittersweet strawberry ganache. Alduin’s core is made of modeling chocolate, which I guess is why it looks so good. It took Vera about 2 weeks just to model Alduin himself, let alone all the work on the cake part.
The scales, horns, and spikes are made from gum paste. The double-sided wings are part fondant and part gum paste. The eyes? Swarovsky crystals – so I guess you can’t eat those. This is one fierce looking cake. Great job, Vera!

Happy b-day other Greg!
I just discovered these “Avengers Assemble” shorts recently, and found them quite funny (and addictive). Here’s the first episode – links to the others appear on the page:

Enjoy, and have a good one otherwise.
